Hi, I’m Divya! My profession and specialties is somewhat of a unique one. How did I end up doing what I am doing?

I was on the path of learning psychology. I completed my diploma and my bachelor of arts in psychology and was looking to pursue my masters. That was when I found art psychotherapy. I knew it was meant for me as I had always loved art since I was a kid and was at one point even thinking to pursue an purely art degree. Doing a masters of arts in art psychotherapy seemed like a perfect blend of my 2 passions. So that was what I did and it was truly a life changing experience!

I gained experience working with children, adults, elderly, and professionals in various sectors like developmental and complex trauma, medical trauma, grief and loss, learning disabilities, and everyday anxiety and stressors. I also worked with individuals who are looking to push beyond their comfort zone, to seek new experiences and discover their self.

Along the way I also found horticulture therapy. I began to pursue a whole new field of interest through online classes and assignments.

My current projects involve working as a lead art therapist with Love, Nils for the oncology patients at KKH and NUH; working with Kampung Senang as a horticulture therapist to provide programmes for elderly and adults with learning disabilities; Working on various personal and commissioned art projects.

What is Art Psychotherapy?

“Art therapy (art psychotherapy) is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Within this context, art is not used as diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing.

Art therapists work with children, young people, adults and the elderly. Clients may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include emotional, behavioural or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions, neurological conditions and physical illnesses.”
